Jewell bolsters Rams squad

Derby County manager Paul Jewell has signed striker Luke Varney from Charlton Athletic, while West Ham defender James Tomkins has joined the Rams on loan.

Twenty-six-year-old Varney initially moves to Pride Park on loan, with a three-and-a-half-year deal taking effect as soon as the January transfer window opens.

Tomkins, 19, has made a handful of appearances for the Hammers and links up with the Rams until the end of the year.

Jewell told his club's official website: "Luke is a player who I have admired for some time and whose progress I have been monitoring.

"He has great pace and ability and I am delighted to bring him to Derby County.

"We have good options in attack and the signing of Luke will give us more to choose from.

"James is a good young player who will train with us for the first time on Friday and he can have an important role to play for the club."
