Jewell: Cup success for fans
03 Dec 2008 - 08:03:25
Derby County boss Paul Jewell dedicated his side's 1-0 Carling Cup quarter-final victory over Stoke City to the club's long-suffering fans.
Nathan Ellington's disputed 90th minute penalty secured the Rams' passage into the last four and rewarded the supporters who stuck with the club during their disappointing last season in the Premier League which ended in ignominious relegation with a lowest ever points total.
"Our fans were humiliated last season by what happened so at least have something to feel good about after this," said Jewell.
"We couldn't have left it much later, it was virtually the last kick of the game.
"It was a great victory for us. Stoke is a tough place to go to, as Arsenal, Tottenham and Aston Villa have found out.
"You can hardly find a tougher place to come and we showed character, strength and mental courage.
"Stoke do not get enough credit, they have good footballers. People only talk about the long throws and set plays.
"They are very good at them, but they also have some good footballers."
