Davies plots further swoops

Derby County boss Billy Davies has admitted that he is still on the lookout for two or three new players, in a bid to boost his Rams squad for the challenge of the Premier League.

Davies has already brought in seven new recruits this summer, but is now being linked with the likes of Southampton striker Kenwyne Jones, Sheffield United frontman Jon Stead and PSV Eindhoven midfielder Mika Vayrynen.

Davies told the Evening Telegraph: "I'm hopeful of bringing one or two in shortly, that's the plan.

"We have got irons in the fire, there have been irons in the fire for several weeks and our fingers are crossed.

"We are hoping we can do some business this week, but the searching will go on right to the end of August."

Meanwhile, injury fears over new signing Claude Davis have abated, with the Jamaican centre-back having taken part in training as usual on Monday.

Davis suffered a slight hamstring strain during the 2-2 pre-season friendly draw with Espanyol at the weekend.
