Derby County boss Billy Davies has rubbished rumours suggesting that he could make a move for Portsmouth striker David Nugent, just weeks after the England man headed to Fratton Park.
The 22-year-old worked with Davies at Preston North End and moved to the South Coast in a £6million deal this summer, although he has yet to score for Pompey in three outings.
However, Davies insists there is not a shred of truth in him trying to set up a reunion with Nugent.
He commented: "I am not sure who is more surprised by this news, me or David Nugent.
"It is nothing more than speculation and the kind of mischief-making you get in the transfer window."
Meanwhile, Davies had admitted that the Rams' move to sign PSV Eindoven midfielder Mika Vayrynen now hangs in the balance.
He told the Evening Telegraph: "The situation is that the financial people are negotiating but, unfortunately, one or two people are moving the goalposts around.
"We have got to be very firm with our offers and our valuations. We'll see what happens on that front over the next few days."
