Clough fails to land new defender

Derby County manager Nigel Clough has failed to bring a new central defender to Pride Park after learning that Dean Leacock could be out for another four weeks.

Leacock damaged a hamstring in last month's victory against Crystal Palace and it has proved to be more serious than was initially thought.

Clough was without six defenders at the weekend - Leacock, Russell Anderson, Gareth Roberts, Jake Buxton, Miles Addison and Mitch Hanson - and has attempted to bring in a 21-year-old defender from a Premier League club.

However, he confirmed to the Derby Evening Telegraph: "His club wanted to keep him with their first-team squad."
