PFA Fans' Player of the Month contenders: Skybet Championship

Chris Martin has played a huge role in Derby's rise to the top of the Championship – not to mention the Rams’ progression to the quarter finals of the Capital One Cup.

Former Norwich striker Martin, last season’s leading scorer, has been on target against Reading (2), Blackpool and Fulham this month to take his tally for the season to 11.

Teammate Simon Dawkins may also have put himself in with a late shout for our monthly award after two stunning strikes in the 5-2 cup win over Fulham.

Talking of ‘stunning strikes’ there are few better exponents of that particular art in this division than Cardiff’s experienced midfielder Peter Whittingham.

Calling on what has become known as a ‘magic wand of a left foot’, Whittingham has been on target against Nottingham Forest and Ipswich during Cardiff’s revival under Russell Slade.

Also in the hunt in the Championship is Hugo Rodallega who has been at the heart of Fulham’s own resurrection after their dreadful start to the season.

Under caretaker boss Kit Symons, and the cup defeat to Derby aside, the Cottagers are a different proposition these days – and that is due in no small part to the form of Rodallega.

He was on target twice in the impressive 3-0 win against Charlton as Fulham continue to claw themselves away from danger at the foot of the table.

No such worries for Bournemouth who are in the middle of the sort of run every manager dreams of; not least boss Eddie Howe who has been impressed with the form of Callum Wilson.

Four league wins on the bounce, including that amazing 8-0 thrashing of Birmingham, have catapulted the Cherries into the top four and they look serious play-off contenders.

Wilson’s goals – nine in all so far this season – have played a big part and he confirmed his place as fans’ favourite with a dramatic winner in the Capital One Cup defeat of West Brom.

Another team riding the crest of a wave are Watford who have stormed into second place, level on points with Derby, on the back of an eight-match unbeaten run.

Returning hero Matej Vydra has quickly re-established himself as the toast of the terraces with two goals during the month, although Daniel Tozser is the man who makes them tick.
