Martin hoping to stake claim

Derby midfielder Dave Martin is relishing the chance to establish himself as a first-team regular in the upcoming npower Championship season. Martin, who joined the club earlier this summer following a successful loan spell, could be the man to fill the void as Stephen Pearson recovers from knee surgery. The 25-year-old scored his first goal for the club in the final game of last season - a 2-0 victory over Cardiff - and he will be looking to pick up where he left off in the new campaign. "It is a big opportunity for me, I am the only naturally left-sided midfielder fit as it stands," Martin told the club's official website. "I am not taking anything for granted though; I know I have to work hard for my place. "Hopefully I can do enough to convince the manager I am worthy of a place in the team. "I am still carrying a little bit of confidence from the way I finished last season, with a goal and win. What I want to do is take that into the season, and with my future sorted and being settled in Derby now I'm really looking forward to the season ahead."
