He joins on a free transfer after having had his contract cancelled at the Stadium of Light by mutual agreement.[LNB]Anderson has put pen-to-paper on a contract until June and is in contention to make his Rams debut against Peterborough on Saturday.[LNB]The 31-year-old joined the Black Cats in a £1million deal from Aberdeen in 2007, having racked up over 300 appearances, and heads to Pride Park with Championship experience under his belt after loan spells with Plymouth and Burnley over the course of the last two seasons.[LNB]Rams manager Nigel Clough: "Russell is an excellent defender who brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge. He is the type of character we are looking to add to the squad; he wants to play football and is prepared to work hard.[LNB]"It might take Russell a couple of weeks to get up to full speed, but we need a fresh face in central defence and we believe Russell has the qualities and courage to step up to the mark if we ask him to."[LNB][LNB][LNB]
