Clough quizzical over Derby display

Manager Nigel Clough questioned Derby`s approach after a Shaun Barker own goal saw them eliminated from the Carling Cup in the first round at Crewe. The Rams looked impressive at the weekend in an opening day win at Leeds but rarely threatened to progress after Barker had headed into his own net on the stroke of half time. "It was a disappointing first half and we didn`t play it in the manner we should have done given the seriousness of the competition," said Clough. "The last 15 minutes of the first half I thought we were settling down and playing some reasonable stuff without really threatening, but it was all a bit too comfortable at times. "There were too many touches at times and we lacked conviction and it is no good starting games slowly and trying to pick it up when it is too late. "The effort to get out and stop the throw that led to the goal was not enough. Shaun Barker must have lost his bearings a little but I still don`t know what he is doing to head it in his own net from there." Clough added: "I'm unbelievably disappointed to be out in the first round, to a lower league club by the odd goal. We are only in three competitions and I'm gutted to be out of one after just four days of the season."
