Clough praises courage of Davies

Derby manager Nigel Clough was full of praise for the courageous Steven Davies after his striker sparked off a comeback which enabled the Rams to salvage a 2-2 draw against stumbling Birmingham at St Andrew's.

Derby were trailing by two goals and seemingly heading for their fourth successive defeat but Davies, who fractured his skull last October in the home game against Southampton, showed no fear when he headed in Derby's first goal in the 61st minute for the Rams' first goal in five games and seven hours of play.

Clough said: "It was great to see him back in action. We took our time with him and it was good to to see him score such a good goal. He has taken his time as he has had some injures over the last four years. But he does bounce back and he does get goals as he proved against Birmingham."

Clough was pleased with the Derby comeback and added: "Playing such a strong side as Birmingham we thought long and hard about how to play. We decided to play three up and to score two goals was doubly satisfying.

"We could have played 4-5-1 but decided to give it a go. To get a draw was very satisfying."

Birmingham boss Chis Hughton admitted: "It was very frustrating. At 2-0 up the fact you're playing at home, you fully expect to go on and win.

"But what we have done perhaps in the last couple of games is conceded uncharacteristic goals, by our standards of where we have been.

"That happens. It's very difficult to go through a full season without having some of the lows to go with the numerous ups we have had.

"Probably at the moment, with the Forest game last week, and the Derby result it's a little bit of a low for us.

"We have to learn from it and look to pick it up again for the next league game."
