Clough backs Savage for Wales recall

Derby manager Nigel Clough has backed Rams captain Robbie Savage to cope with a return to international football if the call comes. Savage won 39 caps for Wales before he retired from the international scene in 2005 following a fall out with then-national team manager John Toshack. Under-21 boss Brian Flynn is now in caretaker charge of Wales and he has not ruled out a recall for Savage, who will turn 36 this month. Asked about the possibility of Savage representing his country again, Clough told the Derby Telegraph: "I certainly don't think playing for Wales would be a problem for him. "He's been a very good player for us in the last 20 months and I think he's done pretty much the same thing for the last 15 years. "To play three games in a week at the level he has at his age goes a long way to show his fitness and desire to keep playing. He's a very important player, especially when we have got so many youngsters around him."
