Whelan facing lengthy injury lay-off

Former Leeds, Coventry and Middlesbrough striker Whelan, 34, had signed on a non-contract basis last Thursday, but managed only 34 minutes before pulling up with a hamstring injury. Manager Steve Staunton said: "We'll be having a look at the injury, but it isn't looking good." Staunton, whose side remain without a win in 12 league matches after losing his first game in charge 2-0 at Victoria Road, added: "I was under no illusions. "I knew between now and Christmas that there was going to be a lot of work done - both on the field and off it. "That hasn't changed. I wasn't expecting to come in and have a bed of roses. We are in this position for a reason. We have to eradicate the stupid mistakes first and foremost to give ourselves half a chance."
