Todd not sure of best team

DARLINGTON manager Colin Todd admits he is not yet sure of his first-choice XI as he is still aiming to find a winning formula. During a poor start to the season Todd has yet to keep the same line-up in consecutive matches and for Saturdays draw with Cheltenham Town he made two changes. Following a poor first-half, Todd made two more switches at the break and defender Matt Plummer, one of his substitutes, created a goal for striker Kevin Gall, who had made his first start. Having recruited 17 players since becoming Quakers boss, Todd admits that at this stage there is still a certain amount of trial and error involved in his team selection. At the moment I probably dont know my best team because theres been that much hit and miss with the players, he said. We work on things on the training ground, were striving for consistency and Im striving to get the right team together. There were good signs up front from Kevin (Gall) and David Dowson came on to gave us that bit extra. Its been a difficult period, building a squad and trying to gel them together, but Im not making any excuses. I know we have to get better. Its been a hell of a difficult time for them but were going to persevere and Im sure in time well get better. Todd is likely to tinker again for tomorrow evenings home game with Lincoln City in the Johnstones Paint Trophy (7.45pm), but changes will not be wholesale. Todd has denied that highly- rated striker Curtis Main is on the verge of leaving, despite not selecting the 17- year-old in his squad for the first time in five games. The transfer window closes tomorrow and Main, who in the summer was invited for a trial with Premier League side Fulham, was conspicuous by his absence on Saturday. He was in the stand at The Northern Echo Arena, but Todd explained: I had Lee Thorpe to consider and Dowson they were on the bench. There was no other reason for Curtis not being there. Former Darlington strikers Barry Conlon and Adam Proudlock were both sent off for Grimsby Town on Saturday but will be available to face their former club at the end of September. The pair saw red for violent conduct deep into injury time during the Mariners home defeat to Aldershot Town, but their three-game suspensions will be completed in time for Quakers visit to Blundell Park. Former Darlington boss Brian Little has been appointed manager of Blue Square North club Gainsborough Trinity.
