Terry confident Quakers have ingredients for success
MIDFIELDER Paul Terry believes Darlington has everything in place to stage a successful assault on promotion from the Blue Square Bet Premier League this season.[LNB] The elder brother of England and Chelsea international John is expected to sign for Quakers this weekend after playing in Thursday's friendly win at Kendal Town.[LNB] He has only been with the club for three days but has already noted the superb team spirit running through Mark Cooper's squad.[LNB] Terry, who has first-hand experience of Conference football from spells with Rushden and Diamonds and Grays Athletic, reckons the camaraderie in the dressing room will stand the club in good stead during the upcoming campaign. But it's the quality of players and coaching staff at the club that has fuelled the 31-year-old's belief they could be set for an immediate return to the Football League.[LNB] I always give one 100 per cent and hopefully bring the kind of experience the team needs to get Darlington promoted back to the Football League, said Terry who is expected to be part of the squad that travel to Billingham Synthonia today (ko 3pm).[LNB] I think it's too early to set too many goals. If you don't start reaching them then you just end up disappointed. Having said that, we know where we want to be by the end of the season.[LNB] We want to be pushing for promotion back to the Football League and with the squad of players we have here and the backroom staff I believe we have a great chance of achieving that.[LNB] I could feel the team spirit straight away. They've had their team-building (in the Lake District) and they seem to have responded really well.[LNB] They've made me feel really welcome and part of the squad straight away. That was important for me and it's a great start to feel so welcome by the lads.[LNB] Terry's arrival will bolster midfield ranks that already feature Michael Brough, Gary Smith, Jamie Chandler and Gareth Waite, plus youngsters John McReady and Corey Barnes.[LNB] It's just a case of crossing the Ts and dotting the Is really, nothing major, and I should be able to sign in the next couple of days, said Terry.[LNB] I was training with Gateshead and I got a call from the gaffer here. It's a big club and he told me all about the intentions of the club, so it wasn't a difficult deal to do.[LNB] Terry was a key member of the Yeovil Town squad that secured promotion from League Two five years ago and after agreeing to become Darlington's tenth acquisition since the end of last season, he is relishing the prospect of being part of Cooper's revolution.[LNB] The lads are dedicated and are willing to work hard and when you have that then you're half-way there, he said.[LNB] It's a great bunch of lads and their work-rate is second to none. When you have that work-rate then the other stuff tends to come with it, so it's very encouraging. We've got a way we like to play and if we stick to that we'll win a lot more games than we'll lose.[LNB] But we're not going to get too carried away. It's a long season and anything can happen, but we know exactly where we want to be and we know what we have to do to get there.[LNB]
