Staunton reveals selection reasons

DARLINGTON manager Steve Staunton has explained the reasoning behind making a surprising line-up change for Saturday's game at Morecambe.[LNB] After fielding the same XI for three consecutive matches, which included a win and a draw, Staunton called on Nathan Mulligan for his first start since November.[LNB] On the wing the former Norton & Stockton Ancients 23-year-old replaced Irishman Tadgh Purcell who reverted to playing as a striker.[LNB] Staunton said: Nathan has done well in training, he's shown a good attitude.[LNB] The change was also to freshen things up, to breath a little bit more life into the team, and to be fair Nathan did well too.[LNB] He played in three different positions, he gave his all and did well. He got crosses in and was unlucky not to score.[LNB] The switch meant Mor Diop was dropped, and Stauton explained: We knew it was going to be a tough game, I felt we needed Tadhg's physical presence.[LNB] I just felt we'd get more out of Tadhg through the middle of the pitch and he proved that himself as he was unlucky in the first half and maybe he could have done better with a chance in the second half.[LNB] We created plenty of chances and that's all you can ask for.[LNB] With plenty of midweek matches to come, Staunton is his now preparing his players for seven games in 22 days.[LNB] They start with back-toback matches at The Northern Echo Arena.[LNB] Sixth-placed Chesterfield arrive on Saturday and they are followed by Notts County, who are seventh, a week today.[LNB]
