STEVE Staunton has been unveiled as the new manager of Darlington today and immediately set about stiffening backbones for the campaign ahead. Staunton enjoyed great success with Aston Villa and Liverpool but now faces a challenge of a different magnitude with Darlington firmly anchored at the bottom of the division. Darlington FC unveil former Liverpool and Ireland player Steve Staunton as their new manager. The new boss is in no doubt as to the size of the problem. He said: "We know its going to be tough but Im looking forward to it. We feel confident that with our contacts in the game and our knowledge of players that we will get one or two players in to benefit the club. "The aim is to make sure we stay in the league and after that we're looking to progress. "The chairman's got ambition, I've got ambition. I would love nothing more than being at the helm and taking this club forward." The former Republic of Ireland boss described the chance to manage Darlington as "a great opportunity to get back into football." He added: "I've had a couple of stints as a manager and as an assistant manager and I think this is a good opportunity for me. "There's no right team or wrong team to join. I'm looking to begin my own managerial career at club level and if you can hack it where I am, with the potential, anything can happen. The club has the potential to go a lot higher. "But the most important thing at this moment in time is to secure league status."
