Staunton backing Byrne

Darlington manager Steve Staunton expects latest signing Richie Byrne to have a big impact on his squad. Staunton drafted in his fellow Irishman on transfer deadline day and the 28-year-old left-back is poised to make his first appearance for the Quakers against Rotherham on Saturday. Staunton said: "Richie can play as a left-back or as a left centre-back. He's a very aggressive, no-nonsense defender and is strong in the tackle, but he can play as well. "He'll be a great addition to the squad for us, especially with the amount of games coming up." Byrne, whose previous clubs include Aberdeen, Dunfermline and Oldham, signed a short-term deal until the end of the season on Monday and is the seventh new signing at the Darlington Arena since the turn of the year.
