Veteran forward Martin Smith hopes to be able to continue his career in the near future, despite parting company with Darlington due to ongoing injury problems.
The 33-year-old has struggled to recover from knee surgery last summer, making just four appearances as a substitute this season, the last of those coming in January against Macclesfield Town.
Smith told the Northern Echo: "It's been strange because when I came back I played a few reserve games and never felt a thing.
"But then I played in the Macclesfield game and afterwards it just swelled up, though there was no pain whatsoever.
"I went back to the specialist and it turned out there were bits of my knee hadn't healed properly.
"The club and I have been talking about it for a couple of weeks and, even if the injury was going really well, I wouldn't have been able to play again this season because I wouldn't be match fit.
"My contract was up in the summer so it was the best for both parties. I understand where the club are coming from and they've been very good to me."
