Positives for Liddle

CARETAKER boss Craig Liddle was left lamenting Darlington’s failure to convert their chances as they crashed to a 2-0 home defeat to Rochdale last night. Quakers should have been in front before Dale opened the scoring in the 60th minute with the matchclinching second coming with ten minutes to go – Will Buckley and Chris O’Grady getting Dale’s goals. Darlington are without a win in their first ten league matches, though Liddle, who is being assisted by Neil Maddison, could not fault the commitment of his team in his first game as temporary boss. He said: “We had a real go. Myself and Neil have only had the players since yesterday but the reaction we’ve had from the players has been excellent. “We had a few chances but didn’t take them and that first goal was always going to be important. Once Rochdale got it we were always going to be up against it. “But we did not defend the first goal well. We had worked on defending their corners to the near post and had done well all game but there was a collision in the box and the ball fell to their player. “There might have been a deflection too, but that happens when you’re near the bottom. “The lads are disappointed in the changing room but it’s up to me and Neil to lift them in time for Macclesfield on Saturday because that’s a very important game.”
