    Penney rues narrow defeat

    18 May 2008 - 15:09:10

Darlington manager Dave Penney lamented his side's failure to hold on after losing a tight play-off semi-final on penalties to Stockport County.

The Quakers led 2-1 from the first leg and struck first in the second through a Clark Keltie penalty, but Dale fought back and took the tie to spot-kicks before booking their place at Wembley after a 5-4 shoot-out success.

"That's life. It's a fine line and they were better than us just because they scored more penalties than us," reflected Penney.

"We've had a good season and we just couldn't finish it off.

"We put ourselves to be in a position to challenge the top three.

"Obviously with the injuries and other things, we couldn't quite get there."
