Penney: Deduction killed us
10 Apr 2009 - 13:32:37
Darlington boss Dave Penney says that the loss of ten points for the club going into administration has killed their season stone dead.
The Quakers are marooned in mid-table as a result of their deduction and Penney believes that the club could have challenged for automatic promotion without their off-field problems.
He told the Northern Echo: "The reason I came here was that there was a decent budget and we could've got a promotion, but the figures I've heard people bandying about this season about budgets are rubbish.
"This club has nowhere near the top budget in the league. It got cut by 50 per cent last summer.
"So I think that makes what we've done this year a better achievement than last season when we were sixth.
"If we still had the ten points we'd be seventh now, but we'd have won automatic promotion because administration has a much bigger impact apart from the ten points."
