The 26-year-old completed his medical on Friday before penning a two-year deal with the Latics to become Penney's first signing since he officially took over at Boundary Park earlier this month. And Penney believes Purdie's versatility will be a great asset to his squad, he told the club's official website: "He plays in any position barring goalkeeper and centre-half, he's good with both foot, he's a good age and he's a great footballer. "He is very consistent and players with the ability to be versatile will be vital to us if we're running with a smaller squad next season. I'm delighted to get Rob on board. I know he's very much looking forward to the challenge and we look forward to having him here. "Sometimes being able to play in many positions hampers players but not Rob. He is a bonus for me as a manager in that he can move around and cover for injuries and suspensions. "I like players with a great work ethic and I want my team to be fit and hard-working. Rob fits into all those categories and he has the quality to go with it."
