More away day blues for Quakers

Darlington failed to take anything from their last ever league trip to Saltergate despite James Collins scoring with a strike from 30 yards.[LNB] The scoreline was harsh on Steve Staunton's side who can take heart from a battling performance but Chesterfield's greater quality in front of goal showed why they remain unbeaten at home this season.[LNB] Staunton employed a 4-5-1 formation with Simon Thomas patrolling the left flank as part of a five man midfield. David Davis played just in front of the centre backs while Curtis Main was the lone front man with Gary Smith offering support through the middle.[LNB] And the extra man in the middle of the park helped Quakers dominate the opening 20 minutes where debutant Jonathan Hogg and Gary Smith enjoyed plenty of possession.[LNB] But the better chances fell to the home side and the excellent Kieran Djalali raced past Corey Barnes to send in a stinging drive that brought a great save from Nick Liversedge.[LNB] John Sheridan's side began to take control and opened the scoring when David Perkins' corner fell to Rob Page and the centre half celebrated his 450th appearance by volleying past Liversedge. And just before the break Mark Allott doubled Chesterfield's lead with a low drive from the edge of the area. Liversedge's view appeared to be blocked by Jack Lester who was standing in an offside position.[LNB] Quakers had a chance to hit back just after the restart but Thomas, who'd been pushed into a more attacking role, failed to capitalise on sloppy handling from home keeper Tommy Lee.[LNB] 207 hardy souls stood in almost incessant rain the away end for and they were celebrating just before the hour when substitute James Collins scored with his first touch of the game. As Lee came haring out of his goal he failed to clear allowing Collins to score a superbly controlled shot from 30 yards.[LNB] Djalali seemed to have quashed any chances of a comeback when he pounced on Steve Foster's clearance to race into the penalty area and crack a shot through the legs of Liversedge.[LNB] At the other end Lee pulled off a world clash save to tip over Thomas' point-blank effort from six yards. But Quakers refused to lie down and after Scott Boden crashed a shot against the bar Hogg slid home Collins' through ball.[LNB] Two late goals by Boden, both set up by Jack Lester, sealed victory for the home side and continued Quakers run of away defeats.[LNB] DARLINGTON (4-5-1): Liversedge;Barnes,Foster,Miller,Giddings;J Smith (Mulligan 70),Davis,Hogg,G Smith (Gray 58), Thomas,Main.[LNB] Subs (not used): Jones(gk),Bower,Groves,Burn[LNB] CHESTERFIELD (4-4-2): Lee;Little,Page,Breckin,Picken;Talbot(Lewis 90),Allott,Perkins (Niven 81),Djalali;Lester,Small (Boden 81).[LNB] Subs (not used): Crossley(gk),Gray,Lewis,Austin,Hall.[LNB] Goalscorers: Page 37,Allott 45, Djalali 68, Hogg 86, Lester 88[LNB] Bookings: Giddings (foul 52), Little (dissent 64), Thomas (dissent 68), Davis (foul 89)[LNB] Referee Jon Moss (Leeds)[LNB] Attendance:3460[LNB] ** READ A FULL REPORT AND ANALYSIS OF TODAY'S GAME IN THE NORTHERN ECHO ON MONDAY**[LNB]
