Smith sinks sorry Rovers Gary Smith was the hero as Darlington upset League One Bristol Rovers 2-1. Both sides scored inside four first-half minutes with Darlington's Michael Brough bagging his first goal for the club after a quarter of an hour. Brough drove home from 20 yards after good work down the right by winger Chris Moore. But the Pirates pegged their Blue Square Premier hosts back with dangerman Will Hoskins curling home a low free-kick after being fouled by Liam Hatch. Rovers felt the incident occurred inside the penalty area so felt justice was done but soon after Hoskins scored, the Rovers striker had to leave the field injured. His absence affected the League One side and 12 minutes into the second half Darlington took the lead again. Rovers' Wayne Brown intercepted Brough's pass but diverted the ball on to his post with the rebound falling kindly for Smith to tap into an empty net. In the closing stages Rovers piled on the pressure with sub John Akinde charging down the left but his blast was tipped away by Sam Russell.
