JAMIE CHANDLER offered Darlington supporters some welcome cheer after he confirmed that he wants to remain at the Northern Echo Arena for the rest of the season. While some of the younger players have wilted this season, the 20-year-old midfielder, whose loan deal from Sunderland expires at the end of December, has flourished. His growing maturity is highlighted by his desire to stay and help secure League Two status rather than return to the comfortable surroundings of the Black Cats academy. “I definitely want to stay here after January,” he revealed. “I have spoken to friends, family and people at Sunderland and they know I am enjoying my football. “Even though the results aren’t going our way I want to play football. And I am here at a big club like Darlington, playing in the North-East, my local area. “It’s absolutely fantastic for me so I would be happy to stay here all season.” Chandler has represented England from the age of 16 and isn’t concerned that playing for the Football League’s bottom club will hamper his international aspirations. “I have played for England over 30 times and I want more of that. If I can help Darlington and boost my chances of getting more chances with England then I will be delighted. It is a difficult time but being in a tough situation can only benefit my career. The pressure is on and I haven’t been used to playing under pressure like this. Playing first team football can only stand me in good stead. “I am enjoying it even though the results haven’t gone our way. It’s very frustrating but we must stick together. I’m still learning the game. “The manager has been really good with me and given me great support and encouragement. I am learning different stuff about imposing myself on a game. The fans have been great with me and the team in general. “It has been a big step from reserve to league football and I have had to grow up fast. I don’t know if I am a man yet! “I am out of my comfort zone and I needed that challenge. I have loved playing on a Saturday and my family and friends texting me saying ‘your name is on Sky’s Soccer Saturday.’
