Darlington manager Dave Penney has made the former Barnsley defender Neil Austin his eighth signing of the summer.
The 24-year-old full-back, who has penned a two-year deal with the Quakers, was released by the Championship side at the end of last season.
Meanwhile, chief executive Jon Sotnick has criticised a recent report suggesting the club was on the verge of financial meltdown.
He told the club's official website: "We are disappointed with the report on the BBC website, which did not reflect the true facts of the financial situation at Darlington Football Club and was in part based on old information.
"The manager has been given an increased playing budget for the coming season and the finances of the club have improved significantly under the new ownership of George Houghton.
"The chairman is an extremely wealthy individual and he has invested substantial amounts of his own money into the football club.
" He is happy to invest in the prospects of both the club and the town and his stated aim is to see Championship football in Darlington by 2010."
