Still thrilled he took a chance on Daggers

Manager John Still was quick to thank his wife after leading Dagenham & Redbridge to an improbable promotion to Coca-Cola League One.

The Daggers were playing Carshalton, Boreham Wood and Heybridge in the Ryman Premier League just 10 years ago but will line up against Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton and Southampton next season after a thrilling 3-2 win over Rotherham at Wembley.

"Six years ago the chairman asked me to come back and help out as they were in a spot of financial trouble. I said no at first, so I have to thank my wife. She told me that they were my team and I would regret it, so I came back from holiday in Cyprus to meet him," said Still.

"He told me all we had to do was stay in the Conference so I have reminded him of that.

"I was all right during the game but I was very emotional at the end.

"The club is very important to me and if I wasn't managing them I would have been with the fans on the terraces.

"It's a fairytale and we keep turning the page and there is more there to read. Let's hope that we can continue it next year."
