Post-match thoughts: Lack of confidence and approach affecting team
Defeat at the Hawthorns saw Palace remain rooted to the foot of the table. Palace Mad looks at some of the discussion points from the game.
Palace’s ninth defeat of the Premier League season only further increased the difficulty facing the team as they try to survive their first season back in the division.
2-0 to the opponents is becoming a very common score, five of the ten games have ended that way, and could be worth a flutter in the next game for any gamblers looking to capitalise on the Eagles’ misfortune. In fact, Palace conceding two or more has happened in all but two of the matches, so there is another potential return there.
With a new manager reportedly not coming in until during the international break, any change in direction and style will not be seen until the Hull away game, which will already have plenty of attention on it for being a game between two promoted teams.
The players therefore do not have a full-time leader to report to. Keith Millen has done and is doing what he can with the team he was left with. But having been Holloway’s number two means there have been no fresh faces or ideas.
The hope, when the new man comes in, is that the fresh approach will be the catalyst for the team who, in a few of the games this season, have had spells where they could not capitalise and clinically get a goal or two. Perhaps these chances can turn to goals and bring some confidence back to the team.
During the first half of last season confidence was in abundance in the squad, and this was reflected on the pitch. Attacking football saw Palace twice come from 2-0 down to win and put five past Ipswich to go top of the league and the confidence throughout the team could be seen in these results.
With no confidence this year any spells, brief as they have been, in games have borne no reward and it would seem that if someone can come in to change things and create a confident atmosphere, coupled with rewarding performances, then perhaps Palace can give a good account of themselves.
