Dowie turns to Andrews

Crystal Palace boss Iain Dowie has hinted that he may hand a starting role to Wayne Andrews to add support to leading scorer Andy Johnson.

The 27-year-old featured as a substitute against Blackburn Rovers last weekend and is well known to Dowie from a spell together at Oldham Athletic.

"Wayne is a player I have a lot of faith in," said Dowie.

"He has always got goals, he has got pace and is very brave. He is quite direct. He does give us a chance to mix things up.

"It is a huge step, but he has done okay. He has done really well in the reserves and I felt he had been champing at the bit. The technical demands on him are very high, so he has got to work on that.

"The rest of his attributes are very good - he is good in the air, very, very quick when you hit the ball right at feet. He just needs to concentrate on the build-up play."

Andrews moved to Palace in the summer from Colchester United.

Meanwhile, the Eagles have been linked with Portsmouth playmaker Eyal Berkovic, who is thought to be unhappy at Fratton Park following the departure of Harry Redknapp.
