Lost count of the amount of signings Crystal Palace made during this transfer window? No-one could blame you, especially as deals continued to be confirmed into Tuesday, after the close of the deadline.
A full squad could be fielded from the new signings with substitutes, although granted this team would have an imbalance at the back.
And it is this imbalance which could be a cause for concern amongst some supporters. The defence has been highlighted by many fans over the last couple of months as somewhere that needs strengthening and the summer window additions of Marange, Mariappa and Hunt may not be quite on the level some would have hoped for.
Ian Holloway confirmed that talks with William Gallas had taken place but nothing materialised. The experience he would have brought could have played an important role in the battle against relegation.
However, at the close of the transfer window Gallas was not one of the names over the line so there is no point in considering what he could or could not have done for the team.
The only concern now for supporters is how those players that have been brought in adapt and fit into the team. Although there may not be an even spread over the positions, the one thing they do provide is improved strength in depth.
It could be argued that the amount of midfielders and wingers is slightly excessive for the amount of positions available in the formation Holloway currently deploys. But in what is sure to be a long and challenging season, being able to bring on additional attacking options when chasing a game could be very effective.
Importantly for the club, the finances of the summer transfers appear to have been kept low in comparison to the rest of the league. This is vital for the security of the club that costs do not spiral. Wages of course will be another issue but it is likely that there will be clauses based on the final league position come May.
There have been a high number of transfers but if the club stay in the league due to the players brought in by Holloway in this window, it will certainly seem worth it. The only real way to judge will be to wait until May.
