Crewe Alexandra striker Luke Varney could be sidelined until the end of April after breaking a toe on his right foot.

An X-ray confirmed the bad news and the club's top scorer is expected to be sidelined for between four and six weeks.

Varney has scored 25 goals in all competitions this term to help the club push for a play-off place despite their poor start to the campaign.

He suffered the injury in the closing stages of the League One clash against Brighton.
