Rix hopes Alex duo stay

Crewe Alexandra midfielder Ben Rix is hopeful that the League One club can fend off any advances for in-form strike pair Luke Varney and Nicky Maynard in the January transfer window.

Both youngsters were on target at the weekend in the 2-0 win at home to Bournemouth, with Varney taking his season's tally to 19, while Maynard netted his 15th of the campaign.

Afterwards, Rix told The Sentinel: "You would expect both Luke and Nicky to move on really, but hopefully they will stay with us.

"Last year I would have said Luke's finishing was good, but this season it has been brilliant.

"He is doing really well and you can't take anything away from him. Everything he is hitting at the moment is going in, which is brilliant for us."
