Crewe Alexandra first-team coach Steve Holland believes they are unlikely to land Colchester United striker Jamie Guy on loan.
The 20-year-old has drifted out of the first-team picture at Layer Road, but Guy's personal circumstances mean he his set to snub the Railwaymen.
Holland told the club's official website: "We have declared an interest in Jamie Guy at Colchester, but that one is complicated for various reasons.
"He has picked up an injury and his partner is expecting a baby. That one does look unlikely, but we think he would have fitted the bill.
"We are after that proven goalscorer but we haven't been able to land one yet.
"We have been looking for a replacement for Luke Varney ever since he moved on in the summer. It isn't easy. Those types of players are hard to replace."
