Crewe Alexandra will continue their bid to avoid relegation to League One without Steve Foster who needs a knee operation which looks certain to keep him out of action for the rest of the season.
Alex boss Dario Gradi has already accepted that the consistent defender will not play again this term and is preparing for life without the 24-year-old.
"Foz has been struggling for a while with his knee," the veteran manager told the club's official website.
"It tends to swell up after games and although it is not a career-threatening injury he needs the operation to sort it out.
"Now is the time to deal with it, because if he keeps on playing then it will cause long-term damage and the welfare of the player always comes first."
A recent slump has left Alex just five points above the relegation zone with nine games of the season left.
