Holland hails Alex victory

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Holland was delighted to see his side cause a shock in the first round of the Carling Cup by beating Barnsley 2-0.

First-half penalties from Michael O'Connor and Anthony Elding took the Railwaymen through to round two, at the expense of their Championship opponents.

Holland said afterwards: "We were rubbish in the cups last year and did nothing.

"The revenue is helpful and the supporters want to see their team in the cup, so we will be taking all cup games seriously.

"The players were all really down after losing on Saturday and they started the game as though they were determined to do something about it.

"We had to defend, but we did it with a fair amount of spirit and a decent amount of organisation."
