Crewe Alexandra's first-team coach Steve Holland admitted that his side had been very lucky to escape being relegated to League Two.
A 4-1 home thrashing by Oldham Athletic left the Railwaymen fearing the worst, but Bournemouth's failure to win at Carlisle United meant the Alex were safe.
Holland told The Sentinel: "Personality, leadership call it what you want, but that is what we need. Neil Cox gave us that personality, but he has retired.
"Without that, we are a rudderless ship and that is what we've got to address more than anything else.
"There is a lack of leadership and character and personality when things don't go for us.
"It was a strange day and to finally not get relegated is a huge relief, although it is tempered by the frustration and anger at the performance.
"It was vital for the football club to stay in League One."
