Gradi finishes on a high note

Crewe Alexandra's caretaker boss Dario Gradi was full of prise for his youthful side after they romped to a 4-1 victory at Hartlepool United.

The Railwaymen gave their survival hopes a major boost at Victoria Park, with rookie striker Luke Murphy getting on the scoresheet and youth team defender Danny Shelley making an impressive debut.

Gradi told The Sentinel: "We hadn't got any defenders, so we had to drag Danny off his Christmas holiday.

"He has been out for a while, but he has been excellent in the youth team this season. All the boys who went in did well and it was a terrific strike from Luke Murphy.

"We controlled the game in the second half and our goalkeeper didn't really have much to save, they were shooting from a long way out."
