Crewe Alexandra manager Dario Gradi has big hopes for youngster Kelvin Mellor after his excellent showing in the recent friendly mauling of Lancaster City.
The Railwaymen ran riot as they smashed their opponents 8-1 with the 19-year-old impressing in an unfamiliar central midfielder role and Gradi wants to see more of the same.
He said: "That is the most comfortable Kelvin has looked in that midfield role and that was a real bonus for us. He was taking the ball short off of the back players and passing it forward.
"Kelvin's goal that he had disallowed was a super header. He can do that and that is why we are eager to persevere with him. If he can pop up and score five goals a season with his head then he would be a terrific asset for us.
"He doesn't have to be a terrific footballer in there and he would probably say he is a centre-half. I don't think he is quite powerful enough to play that role but he could in the future. He has some attributes to work with and won't give up on him that's for sure."
