Crewe Alexandra captain Neil Cox is set to undergo an operation on a troublesome shoulder problem.
The 36-year-old defender is hoping to play in Alex's two games this week before going under the knife and he then faces at least six weeks out of action.
Railwaymen first-team coach Steve Holland told the club's official website: "Neil has visited a specialist and has been informed that he will need an operation to resolve the problem.
"He has been struggling with a problem with his shoulder and neck for a while, but has continued to play.
"It has caused him some discomfort and the problem is deteriorating all the time. It is not something we can wait for until the end of the season.
"It needs to be dealt with now and once he undergoes the operation he will be out for at least six weeks."
