Alex spent big last summer but were still relegated to the bottom tier and Thordarson, who has been charged with restoring their status in League One, is having to wheel and deal to make that possible. "I think the club spent some money last year," he told the Crewe and Nantwich Guardian. "We're trying to bring some of it back, we sold Tom Pope (to Rotherham) and we trimmed down the squad. "The reality is sometimes harsh but my job is to respond to that and I don't have a great deal of money to throw around. "We can't buy our way to promotion, we have to work at it. We need to be sensible and make the right decisions." Thordarson and his new assistant, former Alex player Steve Davis, will begin their preparations for the 2009/10 campaign on Monday when the squad return for pre-season training.
