Crewe Alexandra have had a bid for an unnamed striker accepted by the player's club.

Alex boss Steve Holland has refused to name the player as he steps up his attempts to sign a replacement for Nicky Maynard who moved to Bristol City in a £2.2million transfer last week.

Holland told the club's official website: "We've had a player in mind to replace Nicky, when he moved on.

"We knew that would happen at some stage and, if I'm honest, it's happened more quickly than we thought it would. I thought we'd have him for the start of the season.

"But we've had a written offer accepted by the club and now we hope to arrange a meeting with the player in the next day or so.

"If we can agree personal terms and he passes a medical and he signs, then he could be in our plans for Saturday.

"That's a fair bit of work to do on and we don't have anything further to say until we get to speak to the player."
