Alex missed out on Foster

Crewe Alexandra boss Dario Gradi has admitted that he was keen to sign Stoke City goalkeeper Ben Foster, before Manchester United stepped in for the player.

The 22-year-old eventually joined the Red Devils in a deal that could be worth up to £2.5million, leaving Gradi to continue the search for a replacement for Clayton Ince.

He told The Sentinel: "I was interested in Foster, but as we were deciding we heard Manchester United and Liverpool were ready to do something about it."

Gradi also ruled out a possible loan move for Foster, adding: "If Foster was our player we would have let him and Ben Williams fight it out between them, but not if he's on loan.

"United would want him to play and I would if it was one of my players."
