Crewe Alexandra boss Dario Gradi has admitted that he was keen to sign Stoke City goalkeeper Ben Foster, before
Manchester United stepped in for the player.
The 22-year-old eventually joined the Red Devils in a deal that could be worth up to £2.5million, leaving Gradi to continue the search for a replacement for Clayton Ince.
He told The Sentinel: "I was interested in Foster, but as we were deciding we heard Manchester United and Liverpool were ready to do something about it."
Gradi also ruled out a possible loan move for Foster, adding: "If Foster was our player we would have let him and Ben Williams fight it out between them, but not if he's on loan.
"United would want him to play and I would if it was one of my players."
