Crewe Alexandra have parted company with Gudjon Thordarson with immediate effect and former boss Dario Gradi has been placed in caretaker charge until further notice.
The Icelandic coach had been in charge at Gresty Road since Christmas Eve 2008.
However, the former Stoke City, Barnsley and Notts County manager could not stop the club being relegated last season and pruned his squad over the summer.
After making an encouraging start to the new season, winning four of their opening six league games, Alex have suffered four successive defeats and are currently 15th in League Two.
