Own goals aplenty as Crewe ease through

A classy second half display helped Crewe to a 4-2 win at Macclesfield and secured a place in the Northern Section quarter finals. A messy first half saw three own goals, with the first coming in the fourth minute when former Alex winger Colin Daniel, playing out of position at left-back, shinned a Danny Blanchett cross past his own keeper. But in the 11th minute Patrick Ada, under pressure from giant teenage striker Vinny Mukendi kneed the ball into his own net from close range. Matt Tootle then hit the crossbar for Crewe, with Mukendi hitting a post for the Silkmen. In the 27th minute, Nat Brown brought down winger Byron Moore, allowing former Macclesfield skipper Lee Bell to power home a penalty into the roof of the net. But on the half hour, Mukendi flicked on a Lewis Chalmers long throw for the unfortunate Ada to score his second own goal - again from close range. Crewe took the game by the scruff of the neck after the break with centre-back David Artell heading home a Moore cross in the 47th minute. The goal of the game came on the hour when Bell picked out Joel Grant and he shimmied past Paul Morgan before drilling a left-foot drive into the top corner.
