The 22-year-old right-back, who can also play at centre-half, is set to sign a two-and-a-half-year contract. Martin was on trial when Gudjon Thordarson was in charge at Gresty Road but the Icelander decided against signing him. However, Gradi has gone back in for the player. "Carl is a player I didn't know much about during the summer. I saw him around the place but we always had trialists at the training ground," former technical director Gradi told the club's official website. "On one of his final days he came to train with the scholars and he was very impressive - very impressive. "He was athletic and quick but I didn't see him again because I thought Gudjon wasn't going to sign him. But when I was re-appointed I asked (assistant manager) Neil Baker what had happened to him. "We found out he hadn't signed for Dagenham, where he was on trial, and I told Neil we would be interested in having him again. He is having a medical."
