Kovacs puts skids on Railwaymen

Janos Kovacs scored on his Hereford debut as Simon Davey`s new-look side claimed a 1-0 win at Crewe. The Bulls, who included six debutants, started on top, but Clayton Donaldson should have put the Alex ahead after 14 minutes. Luke Murphy's excellent throughball put Donaldson one-on-one with goalkeeper Adam Bartlett, but the striker dragged his shot wide. Two minutes later the visitors were ahead as Hungarian Kovacs rose unchallenged to head home James McQuilken's corner. Crewe pressed for a leveller, but Calvin Zola could not capitalise when Bartlett fumbled Ashley Westwood's free-kick. Shaun Miller then missed a trio of chances, including a tricky side-footed finish at the far post with an empty net at his mercy. Matt Tootle almost snatched an equaliser, but Bartlett did well to smother ball before the full-back could shoot.
