Railwaymen steam on to leave Bulls bottom

Crewe extended their unbeaten run to eight games as they beat struggling Hereford 1-0 at Edgar Street

Midfielder Luke Murphy drilled a lot shot into the corner with 11 minutes remaining to keep the Railwaymen within touching distance of the League Two play-off places.

Hereford, who drop to the foot of the table with defeat, were the first to threaten as Sam Clucas saw his shot deflected away for a corner.

On-loan debutant Billy Bodin shot wide for Crewe with only goalkeeper David Cornell to beat before heading over Nick Powell's cross, while Ashley Westwood also looped a free-kick inches wide and skipper Dave Artell headed off target.

Bulls defender Ryan Green rifled a blistering 25-yard shot inches wide after the break before Alex `keeper Steve Phillips made a fine save to stop Hereford substitute Delroy Facey.

But it was Crewe who eventually broke the deadlock in the 79th minute, Murphy weaving his way past two defenders before drilling a low shot past Cornell from 10 yards.

Hereford rallied to get back on level terms but Phillips stopped a header from Richard Peniket on the goalline.
