Grant's goal ensured a losing start for Latics boss Roberto Martinez in his first game in charge of the Premier League club. Grant slotted the ball home at the second attempt after Chris Kirkland had saved his initial shot. "We played some good football, especially in the first half. We did the leg work and I was surprised that we didn't score at least one more of the chances we created," said Crewe manager Gudjon Thordarson. "I thought the front four were excellent in the first half. They kept their shape and discipline well and tracked back defensively when they needed to. "They were a threat going forward and on the chances we created we deserved to be ahead at half-time."
