Gradi: We have lots of work to do
Goals from Luke Rodgers and Craig Westcarr in either half put the Magpies in command before Kasper Schmeichel kept out Steven Schumacher's penalty on 76 minutes after John Thompson had pushed Grant.
Gradi said: "The second half we played much better and I was quite pleased. We may even have made a game of it if the penalty had gone in.
"We will get better and will do better than that, but we have a lot of work to do. The first half was a joke, but hopefully we can improve on that performance, otherwise we looked much stronger at the back than we have been for a while.
"It's a game against one of the better sides in this league, but if we want to be involved around the promotion places this season we have to do better than that."
