Crewe boss Dario Gradi promised a new contract for Adam Dugdale after watching him step off the bench to clinch derby-day bragging rights over Port Vale.
Dugdale headed an 81st-minute winner at Gresty Road after Justin Richards` second-half penalty had cancelled out Shaun Miller's opener.
The defender signed a six-month contract with the Alex in the summer but now looks set to remain with the club until at least the end of the season.
Gradi said: "Adam is a terrific bloke to have around the club and looks like he is now worth a place in the team too.
"I will speak to the chairman this week about extending his contract because he looks like he is going to be a useful guy to have around for the run-in. If you`ve got people like Adam who can head the ball in their box then it is always a great advantage."
He added: "We deserved the win. Our players did more than their players and we created the most chances and looked tight at the back too. Had we not given away a silly penalty then we would have come away with the 2-0 victory we deserved."
